Hi Glow in The Dark Soul readers! This is Allie, of Alexandra Rae Design and Document Life Workshop. I'm thrilled to be participating in Elaine's fun Holiday Party! I love the holidays-- I'm pretty much like Buddy the Elf!
One of my favorite things about the holiday is the PICTURES that everyone takes... and, of course, that means SCRAPBOOKING those pictures later! Lately, I've been getting really into digital scrapbooking, so I thought that I would design a cute mini kit for you centered around one of my favorite Buddy the Elf quotes, "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!"
To download the free kit, go here.
I even made a "quick page" for you (it's included in the kit!)-- all you have to do is slide your picture in the blank spot! Here's the quick page with my photo of my husband (from a few years ago!).
You will need some sort of photo editing program to use the elements together-- or you can simply print out the elements and use them in your paper projects! If you want to get into digital scrapbooking, I recommend Photoshop or Photoshop Elements! (Want to know more about digital scrapbooking? Check out my post here)
I can't wait to see what you make with the kit! Be sure to "drop me a line" on twitter or on my blog and let me see what you made!
Happy holidays!

Fall is for kraft paper
If you'll remember from my October Goals post, one of the things on that list was to throw a Halloween party! Ian and I decided to have it coincide with my birthday (Oct. 31)!!! I've been really excited to have an excuse to play with typefaces for this project and I wanted to share the invitations to our Spook Party!
This invitation design was inspired by this etsy seller's invite. Brilliant! But I wanted different wording and for it to have a more vintage creepy feel.
I created this file using Adobe Photoshop! I opened an 8.5x11 canvas with a horizontal orientation and then used guides to virtually cut the paper in half and allow for print margins. Then it was just a matter of creating a million text boxes and layers for each segment of the invite and getting the perfect typefaces to do the job! I printed them on kraft paper in black ink. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
I wanted to get black envelopes, but the craft store was out and the only other color I liked in the 5x7 envelopes was the kraft. I drew out every guest's names in a faux calligraphy with a Sharpie pen, which was super fun!
The back is sealed with washi tape although I totally wish I had a sealing wax kit to seal them with. The little ghostie stamp is one that I carved from a linoleum block and stamped with Staz-On ink!
And there you have it! DIY Halloween invitations that cost me $3.00 total to create! I hope my guests love them! Don't forget to check out the post below for a peek at my Instagram book!

Feature: Arcadia graphic
I'm here today with an interview with Claire, the shop owner of Arcadia graphic on etsy! She's got some of the cutest prints on the web and I can't wait to share some of these beauties and inspiration from Claire with my readers! You know I've already got some coming my way, so check it out below, visit Arcadia graphic, and leave her some love!
1. Tell us a little about the person behind the artistic genius!
"I just graduated from Ball State University with a double major in Urban Planning and Economics (thank goodness!), and I'm attending University of Illinois at Chicago this fall for graduate study in Urban Planning and Policy. I’ve always been very creative-minded (I originally went to Ball State with the intent to study architecture). So when I fell in love with the less design-oriented field of urban planning, I started looking for other creative outlets. I went through a phase of jewelry making, completed a number of DIY projects from Pinterest, of course, and then somehow landed on digital design, which combined the academic design training I had received with my desire to create somewhat offbeat, funky design prints."
2. What kind of artistry do you focus on in your shop Arcadia graphic? How would you describe your brand?
"I definitely say my focus is on poster prints (though hopefully I will also have photography up soon). I would say by brand involves creative, quirky humor as well as custom prints for the home and gifts."
3. How did you come up with your shop name?
"I live next to a town called Arcadia, where my high school was. And my shop focuses on graphic art. Therefore, Arcadia graphic!"
4. You've had QUITE a few sales for the short time you've been open! That must feel fantastic, right?
"Yes! I had no idea how the shop was going to do. Of course I liked my work, but you never truly know how everyone else feels about it until you get some feedback. I’ve been creating things for years, so it feels amazing that other people actually value my work enough to even pay money for it!"
5. What made you decide to open an etsy shop and sell your pieces?
"I essentially started creating these prints to decorate my new apartment in Chicago. My original plan was to combine typography prints, sketches, and photographs I’ve taken in my travels to Haiti and Southeast Asia in a multi-frame collage over my bed. I’d been thinking about opening an etsy shop for a while, wanting to sell various creations. It wasn’t until around February/March of this year that I considered doing poster prints, similar to the ones I sell now. But of course school work picked up as always, and the etsy thing got put on the back burner.
I finally found a little time this summer as I was working as a waitress at a local restaurant that wasn’t doing so hot, and my hours got cut dramatically. Around this time, I paid the deposit on my apartment for the fall, and I saw my summer savings vanish! Luckily I have an assistantship to cover many of my grad school costs, but I was definitely still in need of funds, so I thought the etsy thing might be worth pursuing. I still had a lot going on, but I just decided to suck it up and open shop!"
6. Where do you look for inspiration in your work?
"Everyday things that are essential (coffee) or almost essential (wine). Or things that I love (lake houses, martinis, ice cream). Or things that make me chuckle (potatoes with hipster glasses, penguins, sloths, narwhals, etc)."
7. Would you consider accepting requests or custom orders?
"Absolutely. I recently did a custom order for a friend. The tricky part about setting up such a shop is knowing what people are looking for. When someone requests a custom order, they remove all the guess work and uncertainty."
8. What are some art goals or things you want to accomplish with your shop?
"Ultimately I’m hoping to add some of my photography from Haiti, India, and Nepal. So far I haven’t had time to get all of the logistics figured out for the photography prints. I also want to offer larger sizes of my current prints. Similarly, I’m still working on getting all of the details worked out."
9. Can you share any secrets about upcoming prints?
"I’m hoping to do more custom prints, such as the wedding prints and the lake house prints. I just sold my first lake house print yesterday, so I’m pretty excited about that! Customized prints make great gifts (some of which I plan on using for upcoming weddings and showers that I’m going to), and I’m hoping to further develop my offerings in this category."
10. Anything else you'd like the indie art community to know!?
"I love custom orders, ideas for prints, requests, etc. If there is something you would like to see, please don’t hesitate to ask!"
********************
Thanks for stopping by and meeting Claire! (Isn't she a doll?) What's your favorite print?! I hope everyone's having a beautiful and inspiring day!

Craftcake Design Re-Brand

I've been meaning to write this post for so long, but I was waiting to get my etsy update under way. Since I've been so busy and the update just isn't happening for me right now, I thought I could still rave about my new commissioned re-brand for the shop by Alexandra Rae Design.
Allie Bandy (soon-to-be Allie Trumpower) is owner and operator of Alexandra Rae Design. and Yellow Paper Friday, an awesome personal design business, and there couldn't be a more spirited person behind the genius!

I knew I wanted a complete re-brand which involves SO much change, designing, and WORK. I just didn't have the time and I wanted it done right away, so I opted for the Alexandra Rae Design re-brand package. I contacted Allie, we discussed design, theme, palette, and feel. She ended up emailing me proofs and rough drafts and I loved everything she sent!

I told Allie I wanted something pretty, simple, and earthy, involving a feather design. I gave a few color palette visions I had in mind and she really delivered! The package I chose included a custom logo, etsy banner, avatar image, side bar button, and a multi purpose image to use for packaging, labels, etc. Overall, the design package included everything I needed to re-brand and all I had to do was upload! Her designs are fresh and personal, and her design packages are so AFFORDABLE!!!

Check out her blog and shop to contact her about a blog design or re-brand!

Redesign is in the air
I did another blog redesign last week that turned out reeeeaaaalllly cute! Check out Tori's blog, Neon Sweethearts and see the awesome transformation her blog had!

She wanted something super clean and simple with a vintage feel to match her little house and her life. :) She's adorable and I think that the re-design turned out just like she wanted!
I'm thinking about doing a few blog-design commissions, so if you're interested in a blog redesign by me, please leave a comment with your email address and I will get back to you this week and we'll talk prices! Since I'm getting a degree in graphic design, it's a dream come true to be at a point where I feel like I can help people redesign their online, creative space. :) Plus we all share a love for blogging and our blogs are like our babies. haha Here are some examples of some headers I have done in the past:

EDIT: Please comment also if you would like to see more examples of my work. Also, please be aware that I will not use elements that have rights reserved or protection of terms and conditions from purchased digital kits!
SO like I said, if you're interested, gimme a shout out!
ALso, give a shout out to this pretty lady because it's her BIRTHDAY!!!!!

Ok I'm outie!
